Spread Offense RPO Jet Sweep-Slant Concept

Spread Offense RPO Jet Sweep-Slant Concept

Here is a look into our Spread Offense RPO Jet Sweep-Slant Concept (RPO: Run Pass Option). This concept gives us the option to run either jet sweep or throw a quick slant. This all depends on what the defender covering our slot receiver (3) does. RPOs are becoming more and more popular in football. You now see these run-pass option concepts being executed on all levels of football. Personally, I feel the amount of success RPOs will have on the youth level will be limited. Especially on the younger age levels of youth football. However, I feel this jet-slant concept will work very well for us since we are such a big jet sweep team.

This season I’m coaching 12 and 13 year olds. I feel with repetition we can execute this play with great success. It’s an easy pre-read for the QB. The jet motion will clear out the area for the slant. If they don’t run with or roll a defender over with motion, then we will run jet sweep because we will have an extra blocker at the point of attack.  In addition, this is a man to man coverage destroyer!

(4): Stalk block cornerback.

(3): Full speed jet motion, if the QB puts the ball out take it. If not, continue on jet sweep fake.

(2): Seal defensive end or contain player.

(1): Catch snap, if the defender covering the (3) runs across with the jet motion hit the (SE) on the slant. If the defender covering the (3) doesn’t run with the (3) put the ball out for the (3) to take on the jet sweep.

(SE): Wide split, take one step outside come underneath on the slant. Good stance be prepared to beat press coverage.

Coaching Point

  • Jet motion player cannot go or lean forward until the ball is snapped.
  • Jet motion player does not take the football unless the QB puts the ball out for him to take. If the QB doesn’t put the ball out he fakes jet sweep.
  • QB pre-snap read is the defender covering the (3). If the defender runs with the (3), the QB catches the shotgun snap, plants and hits the (SE) on the slant. If the defender covering the (3) doesn’t run with the motion, QB handoffs to the (3) back on the jet sweep.
  • (SE) Slit-end needs to line up wide so that he gives himself some inside space to work the slant.
  • (SE) takes one step out, forcing the cornerback to lean, then the (SE) comes under and runs the slant.
  • Ball is going to come out quick so the (SE) needs to get his head around and look for the football.
  • (SE) needs to adjust his slant to the open space, don’t run into the teeth of the defense.
  • Should be a quick hitting play, catch snap, get the football out! (QB)
  • Timing needs to be practiced often. This play takes practice, repetition is key.
