Inverted Wishbone- 38 Sweep

Inverted Wishbone- 38 Sweep

Inverted Wishbone- 38 Sweep

This sweep play attacks the edge of the defense with multiple lead blockers and a crack block by the (SE). This play is very easy to implement. It can be install in one practice. If you want to make this play more deceptive you can have the guards pull and one of the running backs fake the opposite way (or fake QB trap). In addition, you can make this a “POWER SWEEP” by pulling a guard (or both) which will give you even more lead blockers at the point of attack. This play can be execute to the (TE) side as well. Make sure you run it to both the (TE) and (SE) side. Running this play to both sides will keep the defense honest.  For you ‘ground and pound’-“Power” football coaches you can even put the (TE) on the same side as the (SE) for even MORE blockers!!

Center:  Block head up defender. If there are double A-gap defenders block backside A-gap defender.

Right Guard: Linebacker- unless guard has a defender in his inside gap or a head up defender.

Right Tackle: Block head up defender-unless tackle has a defender in his inside gap or head up defender.

Left Guard: Linebacker- unless guard has a defender in his inside gap or head up defender.

Left Tackle: Block head up defender-unless tackle has a defender in his inside gap.

Tight-end: Block back-side defensive end- unless there is a head up or inside gap defender.

Split-end: Crack down on defensive end. Cheat split down to create an easier blocking angle.

1:  Receiver snap, hand to the (3) coming in front, carry out fake inside.

2: Lead block. Look to block the cornerback.

3: Take handoff, get outside.

4: Outside linebacker. HOLD OUTSIDE LEVERAGE! DO NOT LET THE LINEBACKER BEAT YOU TO YOUR OUTSIDE SHOULDER.

Coaching Points

  • (SE) cannot blip or spear the defensive end. The (SE) has to cheat his split down enough so that he creates an easier cracking angle for himself.
  • QB must secure snap first, then hand to the (3), then carry out fake.
  • Center must focus on executing a perfect direct snap to the QB. Any snap too high or too low will throw off the timing of the play.
  • The (4) must look to block that outside linebacker, while maintaining outside leverage. He cannot allow the OLB to rip through his outside shoulder. This is one of the most important blocks.
  • You can also pull the play-side and/or back-side guard (optional).
