Twins Formation Playbook Series for Youth Football

This twins formation playbook series features a spread formation with two receivers to both sides of the formation. This twins formation also features a halfback off set to the right side of the QB. This series uses a traditional position and hole numbering system.  Obviously, you can change the position and hole numbering to better accommodate your team.

The twins formation will force the defense to spread themselves out, giving you a soft box. Spreading the defense out will create natural running lanes and easy blocking angles inside.  Soft box means, the numbers are in the offense’s favor inside of the box . If the defense does not spread out or respect the spread formation, then you hit them outside.

Twins 23 Trap

23 Trap

Right Tackle: Secure inside gap. If there is no inside gap defender, block defender over. If there isn’t any inside or over defender, work onto a linebacker. If the defensive end is a good athletic player you can have the RT just block him. 2′ split from guard. Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme.

Left Tackle: Secure inside gap. If there is no inside gap defender, block a defender head up (over). If there is no defender inside or over, work onto a linebacker. We want that tackle to get onto a linebacker, but he must secure his inside and over gaps above all. Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme.

Right Guard: Pull kick-out the first defender outside the left  tackle.

Left Guard:Secure inside gap. If there is no inside gap defender block any defender over. If there isn’t an inside gap defender or a defender aligned over, work onto a linebacker. Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme.

Center: secure pulling guard gap.

1: Catch shotgun snap, hand to 2 back coming across. The QB will secure snap, open hips, square up to the 2 back and hand him the football. The QB’s priority is to give a clean hand-off exchange. You do not want the QB and 2 to collide or alter paths. After a clean exchange to the 2 back, the 1 must carry out a hard continues fake.

2: Cross face of QB, take hand-off, point of attack is the 3 hole. The 2 back needs to cut right off the butt of the pulling guard executing that kick-out block.  Ideally, you want the timing to be where the 2 cuts right off of the pulling guard as he kicks out. The pulling guard should be about 1 or 2 yards in front of the 2 back.

3: Fake block on the defender covering the L, then run up the field on a go/fade route.

4:  Run a Z-out. They must run the patterns hard to hold the linebackers and secondary pursuit players.

R: Go/fade route. Watch the safety and cornerback. If they do not respect or do not run with the go route, throw it to the R on the go.

L: 3 steps towards QB, fake catching a screen.

Coaching Points:

  • All fakes must be executed
  • All pass patterns must be ran hard regardless of the play call.
  • Splits are 2′, you can go tighter or even wider with smart splits.
  • Aiming point for pulling guard is the inside hip of the defensive end he is kicking out.
  • Pulling guard must attack the block and finish the block. Head needs to protect the hole.

Twins 16 QB Counter

QB Running Play

Right Tackle: Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme (I-O-LB).  Must always secure inside or over gap first.

Left Tackle: Work onto linebacker- cut off defender running to the football. Block defensive end if he is a good athlete.

Right Guard: I-O-LB

Left Guard: Pull lead block, look for that outside linebacker scrapping or looping around the 4 crack block.

Center: secure pulling guard gap.

1: Catch shotgun snap, fake hand-off to the 2. You want the QB to execute a good fake, but you do not want him to ride the fake for too long. Much like trap, we want the QB to cut right off of the pulling guard’s lead block. You want the QB right behind the lead blocking guard.

2: Fake hand-off, fill pulling guard gap.

3: Fake block on the defender covering the L, then run up the field on a go/fade route.

4:  Crack defensive end. Make sure the 4 cheats his split in enough so he can crack without clipping or missing the defender. Another option is to have the pulling guard block that defensive end. If you have an athletic tackle you can also reach block the defensive end with the right tackle. I always prefer to work angles when blocking.

R: Go/fade route. Watch the safety and cornerback.  If they do not respect or do not run with the go route, throw it to the R on the go.

L: 3 steps towards QB, fake catching a screen.

Twins L Screen

Screen Left

Right Tackle: Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme (I-O-LB).

Left Tackle: Inside-over-linebacker blocking scheme.

Right Guard: I-O-LB

Left Guard: I-O-LB blocking scheme.

Center: Block head up defender, or backside A-gap defender.

1: Catch shotgun snap, throw accurate pass to the L. As soon as the QB catches the snap, we want him to set, square up, and throw a straight pass right to the L.

2: Fake hand-off, look to block linebacker or defender pursuing to the football.

3: Block nearest defender to the screen. It will usually be the defender covering the 3. If they are playing hard press coverage across the board, then this is not the play you call.  This play is designed to let one of your better athletes work in space.

4:  Z-out.

R: Go/fade route. Watch the safety and cornerback. If they do not respect or do not run with the go route throw it to the R on the go.

L: 3 steps towards QB, catch  screen pass, get up field and make a play.

Coaching Points:

  • Throw this screen when the defenders are playing off-coverage.
  • Quick, accurate pass is needed.

Twins Screen-Go

Screen Go

Right Tackle: Gap-over blocking scheme. Pass blocking.

Left Tackle: Inside gap-over blocking rules. Pass blocking.

Right Guard: Inside gap-over blocking scheme. Pass blocking.

Left Guard: Inside gap-over blocking scheme. Pass blocking.

Center: Secure backside gap-over pass blocking.

1: Catch shotgun snap, throw go/fade route to the 3 back.

2: Fake hand-off, pass block.

3:  Fake block on the defender covering the L, then run up the field on a go/fade route.

4:  Z-out.

R: Go/fade route. Watch the safety and cornerback. If they do not respect or do not run with the go route throw it to the R on the go.

L: 3 steps towards QB, fake catching screen pass. You want this kid to really sell it with a good fake.

Coaching Points:

  • Very good against zero coverage (no safety).
  • Call this play when the defense is playing hard press coverage.
  • Make sure the 3 leaves himself some room to fade out to the sidelines.
  • Quick fake block, release into pattern (make it look like screen).
  • Call this when they are aggressively taking away the screen.

NO HUDDLE

You could execute these plays out of the no huddle. This play series is best when you see how the defense is aligned to the twins before calling a play.

Suggested No Huddle Execution:

  • Play caller yells “twins” or has the QB call “twins” from the huddle. The kids then line up in this twins formation.
  • Make sure there are 7 players on the line of scrimmage. This means the 3 and R have to tell the side judge they are on the football.
  • Communicate these plays verbally.

Verbal Play Calling:

Play: Twins 23 Trap  Verbal Call: ” RIP T”

Rip indicates play will be going right & T  indicates that it will be 23 TRAP play. If you want to run the trap to the opposite side call it “LEO T”. Leo indicates that  the play will be executed to the left, and T indicates that it will be 24 TRAP play.

Play: Twins 16 Counter Verbal Call: “RIP C”

Rip indicates that the play will be ran to the right side of the formation. QC indicates that it will the Twins 16 COUNTER play. If you want to call this play to the left, the the verbal call will be LEO QC, which would be Twins 15 Counter.

Play: Twins L Screen  Verbal Call: “LS”

L indicates that the L will be receiving the screen pass. The S indicates that this is a screen play and the screen blocking rules need to be executed. If you want to run this play to right, the verbal call will be “RS”.

Play: Twins Screen Go Verbal Call: “3G”

3G indicates that the  3 will be running the go/fade pattern.

Again, this is just a suggestion. You can execute this anyway you want. I would strongly recommend calling this out of the no huddle, right from the line. It will allow you to call the right play vs the defensive alignment.
