Motion is probably one of the most underrated and underutilized tactics in youth football. Jet motion is an immediate threat to the edge of the defense. Jet motion forces defenses to adjust to the motion or get beat. We utilize a ton of motion and at first teams don’t adjust with the motion at all. When that is the case, we just kill them with jet sweep. When defenses don’t adjust you can hit them with jet sweep, motion your player across and use him as a lead blocker, or you can use your motion player in the passing game.
Attacking the Flat with the Jet Motion Player | Sprint-out Passing Concept
RG: Pass block.
RT: Pass block.
C: Pass block.
LG: Pass block.
LT: Pass block.
WB (Left): Full speed jet motion, drive route up field for 3 yards break into the out route. Continue route to the field, don’t stop pattern.
WB (Right): Seal edge, block.
L-SE: Mid-level drag. This player must continue his drag route across the field, run to the QB.
R-SE: Corner route. If you are at midfield or in your own end, you can have that SE run off the corner on a go route.
FB: Lead block, roll out with the QB, lead block.
QB: Catch the snap, roll out to the right look to hit the (3) in the flat. If the flat isn’t open, you can hit the L-SE on a backside drag route. If there isn’t anyone open the QB can run. We tell our QBs that if they have space to run then take off up field.

Coaching Points
- Motion player cannot go or lean forward until the ball is snapped.
- Motion player needs to come across at full speed. The idea of this play is to out run the defenders. Never stop running, run to the field.
- Very effective against man to man coverage.
- This play is a run-pass option, if the jet motion player isn’t open in the flat the QB can take off and run the football.
- This is an excellent play to run in goal-line and shortage situations.
- If the QB has running space have him take it. In youth football it’s hard to consistently complete passes.
