Meet Josiah Chester, our newest YFO All-star selection. The one thing that stood out during our interview with Josiah was that he speaks very well and has a high football IQ for his age. His favorite play from this past season was jet sweep. It was very impressive how he was able to not just describe the play, but he was able to understand the concept and philosophy of the play. He talked about how jet sweep is his favorite play because he can use his speed to get outside. Josiah talked a lot about how it’s important to be able to read the offense when you are playing linebacker. Josiah also told us the importance of being discipline and staying home when the play goes away from you (playing linebacker).
Josiah is a very smart kid that really looks up to and takes care of his family. Josiah talked about how being an older brother comes with responsibilities. He stated, “I have to be the best I can be. I must be a role model for younger brother. Josiah was very passionate when he talked about how he likes spending time with his family. He enjoys spending time with his mother and brothers. He also loves training with his uncle Maurice. Josiah and his uncle train regularly on skills and drills that will help him become a better football player.
YFO: What does it take to be a good football player?
Josiah: You must be confident. You have to work really hard every single day. You need to able to tackle and be fast.
YFO: What does it take to be a good RB?
Josiah: You need speed and agility. You need to have good footwork, vision, and you have to work hard.
YFO: What has football taught you?
Josiah: It has taught me to be confident and how to work hard.
Josiah’s mother Ashely stated that Josiah was very shy when he was 4 or 5 years old. He has grown so much since he started playing football. She credits football for helping to develop his confidence. He started playing football when he was 4 years old. He started off at second string but worked hard and become confident and ended up winning MVP. He has great character and he is always looking out for and helping his younger brothers
YFO: What do you like best about playing defense?
Josiah: I like making tackles, getting picks, and causing fumbles.
YFO: What does it take to be a good linebacker?
Josiah: You have to be able to read the field and get to the running back. You have to wrap up, squeeze, and tackle the running back. You need to have speed to the football.
YFO: What do you do for training?
Josiah: Me and my uncle workout. We do sit-ups, push-ups, cones, and ladder drills. We also run hills to help develop my speed and power. I love training with my uncle he helps me be a good football player.

YFO: Why should kids play youth football?
Josiah: You learn responsibility and you learn how to be confident. It helps you learn how to make new friends and how to have fun.
YFO: Who are your biggest influences?
Josiah: My uncle and my mom are my biggest influences. My mom makes sure I work hard at school and read. My uncle spends a lot of time with me training for football.
Josiah is a very impressive kid. He has a strong family support base and he is very disciplined. Throughout our interview Josiah was very well mannered and respectful. He spoke very well and is a very intelligent for his age. This is a very impressive young kid with a bright future.
Josiah does well in the classroom and on the football field. Josiah is an excellent athlete and a hard runner. He utilizes his speed to out run defenders and but also has no problem with lower his shoulder and delivering the contact. He is the complete package as a running back. He has the speed and agility, power, hands, and aggressiveness to run the football with physicality. He also does an impressive job of understanding he has to switch the ball to the outside arm when he runs sweeps. This is something you don’t see very often with young running backs. This is a credit to his coaching staff and Josiah’s ability to absorb information and to being coachable.
Josiah is a special kid with great character, athletic ability, and a strong supportive family. We look forward to watching Josiah grow on and off the football field.
